Take a Parking Lot and Put up a Paradise!
At Smart Trips, our mission is to decrease vehicle traffic in our region by promoting alternatives to driving alone. We’re kicking off Smart Trips Month in May with PARKing SPACES DAY, inviting businesses in a designated area to rent a metered parking space and turn it into a public park space. The public will be invited to walk, bike or ride the bus to each PARKing SPACE to experience the ease of navigating our city without a car and for a chance to win prizes. Why?
- To make our city more liveable – even for one day – by experiencing Knoxville’s potential with fewer vehicles on the street and more space allocated to the public and pedestrians rather than the storage of automobiles.
- To raise awareness – did you know:
- Vehicle traffic is a major factor in our region’s poor air quality and respiratory health problems. Trips less than 2 miles long are the most polluting and are easily traveled by bike, bus or walking.
- It costs 2.5 times more to provide parking for one car than to shift one person from driving to riding the bus.
- Studies have shown that removing parking spaces to provide widened sidewalks or bike lanes actually improves business.
- Studies have also shown that pedestrians are the best customers – they spend more time in businesses and spend more money.
