| HISTORIC FOUNTAIN CITY WALK: MAY 27, 2009

About 140 people came out Wednesday evening for the Historic Fountain City Walk. They gathered at the Gazebo in Fountain City Park before heading out. The Smart Trips event was co-sponsored by Fountain City Connections, a grassroots group working to improve pedestrian safety and access in the Fountain City neighborhood and beyond.

Dr. Jim Tumblin, Fountain City historian, led the walk. The first stop was the location of the Fountain Head Hotel, which was built in the 1880s and burned down in 1920. Dr. Tumblin provided the text for a brochure about Fountain City history, which was printed by Fountain City Connections and provided to walk participants.

The walkers stretched out for several hundred feet as they left the park to tour several historic Fountain City sites, including the site of the station where the trolley from Knoxville to Fountain City used to turn around, and Fountain City Lake.
