Commuter Close Up

Robert Gomez

Robert GomezLet us introduce Robert Gomez. Smart Tripper, Bicycle Ambassador, student. Robert is new to Smart Trips but has been bicycle commuting for a while. He loves that Smart Trips is a FREE program that promotes healthier lifestyles, offers chances to win prizes and opportunities to meet like-minded folks. And did he mention, it’s FREE? Recently, we asked him a few questions about his commuting habits and involvement with Smart Trips.

How did you get started bicycling?
I’ve ridden bikes (to commute) since high school, but when I bought a truck I stopped. After moving to Knoxville from Southern California, I now have a cyclocross bike that is perfect for my commuting needs. I have always loved cycling, and enjoy the feeling that consumes me after a long ride—pain, exhilaration, and accomplishment, plus it helps keep me healthy and keeps $$$$ in my pocket.

How did you hear about Smart Trips?
I was volunteering as a Bicycle Ambassador, a person who helps people become involved with cycling and gives them information. The Smart Trips booth was next to the Bicycling booth at an event and after talking with them, I became a fan. I signed up and started logging my trips. All I had to do was log what I was already doing, and for doing that I earned some nifty incentives.

What keeps you motivated to keep on with alternative commuting?
First off, I hate paying for gas! Second, I’m a bartender and a student, my schedule is hectic at times and this allows me to get an extra workout in between work and studies. Lastly, if I ride my bike I won’t have a beer or two after work, so it helps keep my priorities in check.

Why do you think a program like Smart Trips is important?
Allowing the community access to information about alternative commuting is important. It cuts down on traffic, helps preserve our natural resources, promotes a healthy lifestyle, and promotes a friendly environment. With my degree in Kinesiology, I understand the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle and these types of programs incentivize others to follow the same path.
